Most stick welders today plug into a standard outlet. That can give you a decent weld, but it won’t give you a hot weld. With the Sun Gold Power 200A Stick Welder, you can convert it into a 220 so you get a hotter weld. That makes it useful for household repairs, a small side hustle, and other small-to-medium welding tasks.

We found that it is able to burn DV Reverse rods fairly well. We used E6010, E6013, and E7018 rods, all 3/32s, and could weld from virtually any angle with relative ease. One note on going up to a higher voltage: the included plug-type is rated to 15 amps, so you won’t get the maximum amount of heat from this welder unless you rewire it.

What to Expect with the Sun Gold Power Stick Welder

The puddle is about what you’d expect to see on a stick welder that is this affordable. It isn’t really smooth and there is a bit of splatter that develops when you’re working. With a little practice, you can work it out so that you’re not stuck with pin holes or trapped slag.

The unit, as a whole, is pretty lightweight and comes with a secure carrying handle at the top of the case. It has an 85% rated efficiency, features a 1.2m grounding cable, a 1.8m welding holder able, and a protection grade of IP21. You can vary the current from 20 amps up to the max amperage, with a rated duty cycle at the full amperage of 60%.

For most small-to-medium jobs, it is going to work effectively – even if you haven’t fully prepped your materials.

Features of the Sun Gold Power Stick Welder

  • It has an advanced control module lGBT with 110/220v to improve the performance of the welder, allowing operators to tackle different projects with relative ease.
  • The amount of splatter is relatively low, especially compared to the amount of penetration that this welder is able to achieve.
  • It has over-voltage and under-voltage protection, as well as overload and over-current protections, so operators can focus more on the weld instead of on how the equipment is operating.
  • There is an automatic hot-start built into the welder.

We did have one point of contention with this particular welder. Although it states that it comes with everything you need to get started with stick welding, it didn’t come with any leads. Our Bottom Line: There are better welders on the market today, but not necessarily at this price. There are certain challenges that must be met when looking at the finished weld, but if you know how to work with a pool, you’ll be pleased with what can be accomplished with such an affordable welder. Take some time, get to know the equipment, and we feel like you’ll agree with us that the Sun Gold Power 200A Stick Welder is a tremendous value buy.
